The Belle Époque Single Strand Sainte-Cécile Necklace is single strand of shimmering Bohemian channel-cut crystals catches and scatters light like quiet notes in the air, leading the eye to an early-1900s French Art Nouveau Sainte-Cécile medal, reverently re-cast in warm gold bronze from its original die. She stands serene, robes flowing like liquid gold, lyre cradled close, gaze lifted toward a melody only she can hear, encircled by the delicate inscription “Ste Cécile Vierge et Martyre.” Worn close to the heart, this necklace becomes a gentle reminder that even amid life’s clamor, the truest melody is the one the soul keeps singing.
16" length standard (custom lengths gladly made); limited edition, assembled entirely by hand for those who carry music—and light—within them. Made in the USA, in our sweet studio sanctuary in Wellfleet, MA. Medals are recast for us by artisans based in New England.
Saint Cecilia, a noble Roman maiden of the second or third century, secretly vowed her virginity amid a society that expected marriage and heirs. On her wedding day, while pipes and lyres filled the banquet hall, she sang silently in her heart, asking to remain untouched and faithful to a deeper calling. When her Christian faith was discovered, she was condemned: first suffocated in a scalding bath that left her unharmed, then struck three times on the neck by the executioner’s sword. She lingered for three days, blood flowing yet still praising in quiet joy, before peacefully dying.
In 817, Pope Paschal I rediscovered her body in the Catacomb of Callixtus—perfectly incorrupt, lying on her side as though gently sleeping, the wounds at her throat still visible, clothed in gold-threaded robes with blood-stained linens at her feet. This miracle sealed her fame, and by the fifth century her name was already woven into the Roman Canon of the Mass, where it is spoken to this day.
From the Renaissance onward, artists crowned her with the lyre and organ pipes, naming her patroness of music, musicians, composers, singers, poets, and instrument makers. She is also invoked as protector of choral societies, throat ailments, and—fitting her story of inner fidelity against outer pressure—those who seek courage to live according to conscience. Through centuries of paintings, cantatas, and quiet devotions, Cecilia remains the gentle witness that the purest melody is the one the soul refuses to silence.
