At the center, the Mary Magdalene at La Sainte-Baume medal shows a contemplative Mary Magdalene gazing toward the heavens, with the rugged mountains of La Sainte-Baume in the background. A skull sits to her right, reminding us of our mortality and honoring her feast day on July 22nd. Legend tells us that after the Resurrection, Mary Magdalene along with her brother Lazarus and her sister were set adrift in a rudderless boat and miraculously landed on the shores of southern France, where they were greeted by Sara-la-Kali (Saint Sara), patroness of the Gypsies. Mary Magdalene then withdrew to a grotto at La Sainte-Baume, where she lived in prayer and penance for the last 30 years of her life, teaching all who came with a “voice that flowed like honey.”On the reverse, her long hair touches the ground as four angels lift her into heaven for her daily communion with the Divine — said to happen seven times a day. The number seven symbolizes spiritual perfection and reflects her profound wisdom and closeness to the Sacred Mysteries.
