The Black Madonna of Czestochowa
Today is the Feast of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa. The history and mysteries surrounding this famous Madonna and Child painting date back to 326 A.D. when Saint Helena found Her in Jerusalem. It's provenance has been well documented as it made it's way from Jerusalem to it's current home in Jasna Gora, Poland, where she is one of the world's most traveled to Pilgrimage sites.
It is widely believed that the Black Madonna was painted by Saint Luke on the Holy Family's dinner table made by Saint Joseph and Jesus. Over the centuries, the Black Madonna has been the subject of attacks and thefts that have left her scarred, but unharmed. Woven into Her story are tales of invaders plundering her shrine to steal the holy painting, only to have their efforts prove fruitless, when the horses pulling their wagons of loot refused to move. Nonetheless, resulting in the scars on our Lady's face, left by an angry swordsman who met
his demise soon after by bolts of lighting.
And then there are the healings and the miracles....
I've been searching for a wonderful Lady of Czestochowa medal for a long time and I finally found one that expresses her beauty and love in Belgium. I designed this necklace to wear myself, so it reflects my personal aesthetic. I have a special affinity to the Black Madonna. The blue in the Blue Tortoise reminds me of her robe, while the black flecks call in the sacred mysteries surrounding her. It's now available in the Black Madonna Collection. I hope you enjoy meeting her today if you haven't yet and saying hello again if you do.
