This lovely medal shows the Virgin Mary with her arms outstretched as "Our Lady of Mercy". The inscription around the edge is in French and translates as "O Mary Conceived Without Sin Pray for Us Who Have Recourse to You".
The Miraculous Medal was created by Saint Catherine Labouré following her vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1830. Mary appeared to St Catherine, a nun, in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity on the Rue du Bac in Paris and gave specific instructions for how the medal should look and promised special graces to those who wear it. Many Catholics believe that wearing the medal with faith can bring special graces through the intercession of Mary. The medal should serve as constant physical reminders of the wearer's devotion and Mary's promise.
