The Christo Rey is an amazing double sided holy medal that features Our Lady of Guadalupe and Saint Michael. It is one of our most treasured finds. The original medal dates back to 1682 when it was cast as a token of gratitude to be given to the generous patrons who helped build the "Templo Expiatorio a Cristo Rey" - the early basilcia in Mexico City created to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was started in 1680 and completed in 1709.
We aquired one of these original medals from a monk who held it in his collection for generations, it was passed on to him by another holy man. It is a symbol of the divine protection of the Virgen de Guadalupe and Saint Michael. The combined power of the two is palpable. We have paired it here in our Moss Fussion represented by frosted Moss Agate which "refreshes the soul and enables the wearer to see beauty in all that they do. Laboradite accents for enchanced vision and intuiton are carefully placed throughout. It can be custom made in any of our gemstones, just ask us! The original medal is bronze and had remnants of paint on Her garments when we found it.
It is absolutely beautiful all by itself or layered with our other designs. This necklace is long enough to be worn doubled quite comfortably and is shown double wrapped. We accented it with a vintage Saint Benedict medal aka San Benito. The San Benito has a powerful Latin prayer inscribed on it that casts away evil. The Benedictine Monks are know for their devotion and protection of the Black Madonnas worldwide.
On the front of the medal:
"Virgin of Guadalupe, the mysterious ayate, an image that is venerated by the faithful. As proof of her apparition on December 12th, 1531, the virgin impressed her image on a cloth woven from maguey fiber that cloaked the mystic, clairvoyant Aztec Indian, Juan Diego Infinite are the favors granted by the Virgin of Guadalupe. Catholic or not, millions of us take refuge under her comforting starry mantle. She is our Guadalupe. mother of all."
